Independent Correctional Centre Visitors (X12 Posts)

The Department of Correctional Services, through the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS), is recruiting Independent Correctional Centre Visitors (ICCVs) across multiple provinces for a 36-month contract period. This is a critical opportunity for community-minded individuals to play a meaningful role in safeguarding the rights of inmates, monitoring prison conditions, and strengthening oversight within correctional centres.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Senior Certificate (essential)
  • Computer literacy and attention to accuracy
  • Recommendation/nomination letter as an ICCV from a recognized community organization (not older than six months)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Sound knowledge of Batho Pele principles
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Assertiveness and professionalism
  • Driver’s license (advantageous)

Note: Preference will be given to candidates living near the correctional centre.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Conducting daily visits to assigned correctional centres
  • Engaging with inmates and correctional officials regarding complaints and concerns
  • Monitoring incarceration conditions and ensuring compliance with standards
  • Reporting on deaths, segregation practices, mechanical restraints, and use of force incidents
  • Supporting JICS inspections and investigations
  • Managing administrative tasks and documentation
  • Capturing and processing inmate complaints systematically
  • Compiling detailed reports on findings and observations
