The Impala Platinum Engineering Learnership Programme 2026 is now open, offering training in two critical engineering trades at one of South Africa’s leading platinum refineries.


01 — Available Learnership Streams

Fitting Including Machining Gain hands-on experience maintaining and repairing industrial machinery used in mining and processing plants. Develop critical skills in mechanical systems. Skills: Mechanical Maintenance · Machine Assembly · Precision Measuring · Engineering Drawings · Fault Finding · Component Alignment

Boilermaking Work in metal fabrication, structural steel work, and heavy industrial maintenance. Boilermakers build and repair the large metal structures that keep refineries running. Skills: Steel Fabrication · Industrial Welding · Metal Cutting · Structural Installation · Engineering Drawings · Equipment Repair


02 — Programme Structure

The 42-month programme follows a structured artisan training model, combining theoretical learning with practical workplace experience across four phases.

Phase 1 — Foundational Training Workplace safety introduction, Basic engineering theory, Workshop practice, Equipment familiarisation

Phase 2 — Workplace Training Plant section rotations, Mechanical systems exposure, Maintenance processes, Equipment diagnostics

Phase 3 — Advanced Practical Skills Precision measurement, Drawing interpretation, Maintenance planning, Plant troubleshooting

Phase 4 — Trade Test Preparation MQA certification readiness, Practical assessment prep, Theory examination review, Artisan qualification


03 — Minimum Requirements

Fitting Including Machining (N2 / NCV Level 4)

  • N2 Certificate OR NCV Level 4 – Mechanical Engineering
  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Fitter Trade Theory
  • Engineering Drawing
  • Basic understanding of mechanical trade principles
  • Medical fitness to work in mining plants

Boilermaking (N2 / NCV Level 4)

  • N2 Certificate OR NCV Level 4 – Boilermaking
  • Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Structural Steel Drawing
  • Plater Trade Theory
  • Basic knowledge of boilermaking principles
  • Medical fitness to work at refinery plants
