South Africa’s tourism sector continues to create meaningful short-term work opportunities for young people through public employment programmes. One of those opportunities is the SANParks EPWP Tourism Monitors Programme 2026, which is currently recruiting 13 Tourism Monitors for placements at selected national parks in the Western Cape.
This programme is run under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), implemented by the Department of Tourism in partnership with South African National Parks (SANParks). It is aimed at unemployed youth aged 18–35 who have an interest in tourism, conservation, and public-facing roles at some of South Africa’s most visited natural and heritage destinations.
If you live near Table Mountain National Park, Agulhas National Park, or Bontebok National Park, this could be one of the most accessible ways to take your first step into the tourism sector — even with just a Matric certificate.

What Is This Programme and Why Should You Apply?
The Tourism Monitors Programme is part of the government’s broader effort to reduce youth unemployment, support the recovery of the tourism industry, and improve the experience visitors have at national attractions.
Participants are placed at tourism sites close to where they live and receive structured workplace exposure in a real, operational environment.
Although the contract is only four months long, completing it can open doors to future opportunities in:
- Conservation tourism
- Environmental and heritage programmes
- Hospitality support roles
- EPWP Phase 2 placements
- SANParks seasonal employment
For many young people, this programme becomes their first real foothold in the tourism job market — and that first step matters more than most people realise.
What Tourism Monitors Do
As a Tourism Monitor, your day-to-day work will involve:
